Rama Jyoti Vernon began her interest in metaphysics and
mysticism as a child, with parents who were pioneers in holistic
health.  Ultimately, she became one of America's first Yoga
teachers, and was instrumental in bringing many great
teachers from India to the U.S., co-founding the Yoga Journal
and developing organizations such as Unity in Yoga, to unite all
lineages of Yoga. As a housewife, mother and Yoga teacher,
Rama found herself applying Yoga philosophy in a whole new
arena, international peacemaking. During the 1980s she made
dozens of trips to the U.S.S.R, and founded the Center for
International Dialogue, based on the idea that people can join
together to initiate solutions for political, economic, ecological,
humanitarian and cultural conflicts.

Over the centuries, Hatha Yoga has fallen into disrepute by
those who feared it might create too much bodily preoccupation
and spiritual distraction. However, rather than dismissing it as
an exercise only for the body, scriptural writings uphold that
Hatha , one of the earliest traditions of yoga, evolved as a
spiritual practice to meet the connubial needs of the
householder. The legendary origins of its beginnings are said to
date back to the mythological time of the great God of Hindu
pantheon of dieties, Lord Shiva. It is during a dialogue between
Shiva and his spouse Parvate that Hatha Yoga is believed to
emerge.

Rama Jyoti's January 2010 Newsletter

Dear Ones,
I'm sending many wishes for a healthy, peaceful, abundant and
Happy New Year! As 2009 closed and the new of 2010 opened a
fresh decade. I was blessed by spending time with my family. Now,
Max and I are beginning a new chapter in our lives as he offers his
service to the Unity Center and community in Tyler, Texas, where I
will join him in the summer.

The past year, and decade have been filled with many tragedies,
catastrophes, great losses, and along with that, many joys.  More
and more, I meet those who have experienced loss, and I know that
there are many lessons to be learned and great good that comes out
of the difficult times. As always, yoga and the breath will help us get
through.

As the coming year approaches, I look forward to meeting new
friends, seeing those we know well and traveling to exciting places
where I will continue my teaching. This month I will hold workshops
in Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. And I hope you will join me
at a very exciting retreat on the coast of Mallorca, where dear friend,
Elisabet Sahtouris has found a beautiful site for yoga! My best
wishes to all of you. I hope we will meet in the coming year.
With love, light, and gratitude,
Rama
